Most Online Content Created by Teen Girls [2/28/2008]

Like its predecessor, the telephone, it appears that teen girls have taken their aptitude for communication online. Not content to rule one online medium, teen girls created more content in almost every online forum from blogs to websites to photos.

According to researchers at the Berkman Center for Internet & Society, girls appeared to be more motivated by self-expression, while boys focused on impressing others.

More expansive findings from Pew Internet & American Life Project, which conducted a study of 12 to 17 year-old boys and girls, include the following:

From 2004 to 2006, teenaged bloggers doubled in size; girls outpaced boys by a wide margin (more than 33% to 20%).

Girls were more active social networkers than boys, with some 70% of 15 to 17 year-olds reporting that they had an online social profile, compared with just 57% of boys.

Surprisingly, girls also created more web pages than boys, by a 10% margin (32% to 22%).

The only online outlet where boys outpaced girls was video posting; boys were two times more likely to post a video than girls.
