Web Content Management Systems [4/14/2008]

Web content management systems have come a long way beyond simply filtering bad URLs and keeping pace with dirty word lists. Today’s systems require keeping pace with such web advancements as social networking and marketing sites, peer-to- peer sites, malware capability and instant messaging.

Hence, web content management systems have become more sophisticated than ever before. Following is an overview of what’s going on with content management systems right now.

Detecting Cyber Threats: Cyber threats take many forms nowadays; there is no fluid definition. For just as the content management software to detect Internet fraud has advanced, so have cyber criminals in their methods.

With that being said, following are two things to keep in mind in this area: (i) look for software that stays abreast of all types of web-borne threats; and (ii) avoid latency issues by keeping your perimeter policies light.

If your perimeter architecture is heavy, it can cause real problems. One of the best ways to avoid this is to consider how your employees use the web and tailor it to those specificities.

Functioning and Networking Capacity: Overall, most of the systems available function to a high degree of competency. Many are able to be deployed easily, and are easily manageable.

Scalability: The news on this front is that web content management systems are taking large and small business needs in to account, as both types are readily available.

For small networks, many content management systems are scalable in that they can handle the use of multiple devices on various Internet-facing segments. A cause for concern on this front is that they can’t be managed well as a group from a centralized location. Furthermore, they do not scale well to a single large pipe.

The bottom line is small and large enterprises need content management systems. Getting the right one is as simple as assessing your organization’s needs, selecting the right features and planning your rollout carefully.
