More Americans are spending more time on the web, shopping, e-mailing, participating in online communities and just looking around, according to the seventh annual survey of U.S. Internet activity by the Digital Future Project of the Annenberg School for Communication at the University of Southern California.

The survey found 60% of Internet users 18 and older shop online, spending on average under $100 a month and making an average of 36 web purchases a year. 71% of online shoppers say they sometimes or often browse in stores before buying online, and 67% say their web purchases cut into their shopping at local stores, up slightly from 65% in last year’s survey.

Concerns about the security of entering credit card information on web sites remains high, at 57%, but has plateaued at about the same level for the past four years of the survey.

The Digital Future Project surveys the same more than 2,000 U.S. households each year, exploring the impact of Internet technology. Here are some other findings from this year’s report: Each week, 96% of online individuals use e-mail, 71% surf the web without a specific destination, 60% look for news online, 43% search for product information, 38% use online banking or other financial services, 37% use instant messaging, 35% play online games and 25% search for humorous content.

80% of Internet users consider the web an important information source, ranking it higher than television (68%) and radio and newspapers (both 63%).

Average number of hours online rose to 15.3 per week, up by more than an hour over 2006. More than three-quarters of home Internet access is broadband, a 25% increase from the previous year. 15% of Internet users say they are members of an online community, and 54% of those individuals say they log into their community at least once a day.
