US Retail E-Commerce Primed for Growth [2/22/2008]
Internet marketing studies and projections for the growth of online retail spending bear this out. $215 billion, $240 billion and $334 billion are the figures predicted by research firms JupiterResearch, eMarketer and Forrester, respectively, in relation to what US online retailers will ring up in 2012.
Why the wide disparity? Categories covered. Of the three companies mentioned, Forrester included some products which were considered services by others, ie, eMarketer.
As consumers shift from shopping at the mall to on the internet, sales growth for online retailers over the next five years is forecasted to be in the double digits (mid teens). In contrast, the same projections for brick and mortar outlets pale in comparison, only reaching the mid to low single digits.
Researchers attribute some of the disparity more to online shopping maturation than consumer dissatisfaction with traditional shopping outlets.
