US Females Outnumber US Males Online [3/24/2008]

There are over 5 million more females in the US than men (154.5 million females to 149.4 males). This is but one reason that US women outnumber US men online.

Adult females use the Internet slightly less than their adult male counterparts. eMarketer projects that this trend will continue. It forecasts that that in 2008, 68% of adult females will use the Internet at least once a month, while 70% of adult men will. In hard numbers, that translates into 100.4 million females and 93.5 million males.

The majority of female online use is driven by teenage girls. Carrying their penchant for socializing into the online world, 35% of them wrote blogs, for example. Only 20% of online teen boys wrote blogs. Overall, 55% of online teen content was created by girls. This is according to a recent Pew Internet & American Life Project survey.

What does this mean for online retailers? A host of Internet marketing opportunities targeting women and girls.
