WebTrends Dynamic Search Redirect Problem with Google Analytics “gclid” Parameter

As most of you Google Analytics (GA) users know, you can setup your Google Analytics account to automatically receive Cost Data from your Adwords account.  This data can only be correlated to your Traffic & Commerce data as long as the “gclid” parameter makes it to the Actual Website (which Google Adwords AUTOMATICALLY appends to the end of your destination URLs upon click from your paid search ad).

Well we’ve found that WebTrends’ redirector script used for their Dynamic Search product doesn’t pass along that “gclid” parameter back to the actual website.  Therefore, Traffic and Commerce information within GA is not correlating to all that Juicy Cost Data that advertisers pay a lot of $$$ for in Adwords.

Here’s a sample URL from a Dynamic Search Destination URL setup in Adwords

    http://rd.clickshift.com/rd?
    tid=123412341&cid=2134&pri=04&eid=1234123&
    url=http%3A//www.AWebSite.com/index.html%3F
    WT.ev%3Dclicks%26WT.medium%3Dcpc%26
    WT.term%3Dkeyword%26WT.mc_id%3Dsgaw703%26
    WT.campaign%3D19%26WT.content%3Dtext%26
    WT.source%3Dgoogle

After someone searches Google and clicks on this Ad, the following SHOULD BE the Automatically Adjusted Google URL with the “gclid” parameter:

    http://rd.clickshift.com/rd?
    tid=123412341&cid=2134&pri=04&eid=1234123&
    url=http%3A//www.AWebSite.com/index.html%3F
    WT.ev%3Dclicks%26WT.medium%3Dcpc%26
    WT.term%3Dkeyword%26WT.mc_id%3D1234123%26
    WT.campaign%3D19%26WT.content%3Dtext%26
    WT.source%3Dgoogle&
    gclid=CJr1_snj7o8CFSBeagodNVwbKg

HOWEVER, this is what comes out of the WebTrends Dynamic Search Redirector Script when reaching the actual website:

    http://www.AWebSite.com/index.html?
    WT.medium=cpc&WT.term=keyword&
    WT.mc_id=1234123&WT.campaign=19&
    WT.mc_ev=click&WT.content=text&
    WT.source=google

Notice, there is no "gclid" parameter being passed back to the website after being redirected by the Dynamic Search script.

Althought I haven't been able to verify this, you will not be able to pull Adwords Keyword Position reports correlated to Traffic or Commerce Data like the following sample report shows:

This is a TREMENDOUSLY VALUABLE report to any Adwords Advertiser and to not have access to this type of information could be costing advertisers a TON of money by targeting wrong keyword positions!

We’ve called WebTrends support and found that they know of the problem with their Redirect Script and that they have it on their to-do list.  As for priority, it might NOT be the most important issue on their list at this time.

Laughing
WHAT WE NEED: Everyone who is using Dynamic Search should call their WebTrends Support & Customer Service Rep to inquire about this problem so we can get it to the TOP of WebTrends’ to-do list.

Cry
OTHERWISE, what you're left with is just the PLAIN OLD Adwords Data as a stand alone report NOT correlated to Traffic & Commerce data within GA.

I wanted to provide details as to why the “gclid” parameter is not supported as well as clarify that Dynamic Search does indeed work with Google Analytics.
The “gclid” is an external parameter for us and our security policy does not allow us to pass external URL parameters. The reason for this is that other malevolent parameters could be appended to the string and passed along.
Note that Dynamic Search does completely support Google Analytics tracking for all clients. This is supported by enabling the appending of “utm_xxxx” parameters as suggested by Google here www.google.com/.../answer.py?answer=55488

Eddie,

Thank you for the response and explaining a little about why WebTrends Dynamic Search does not allow for External Parameters to be passed through your redirector script. I’m still a little confused about what exactly WebTrends considers External Parameters.

If a client has a dynamic page like the following:

WebSite.com/index.asp?product=12345

Is this “product” parameter considered external?

What if a client has a separate 3rd party conversion tracking system that is tied to a backend business intelligence system like ProClarity and requires certain source parameters to be passed back? Will you not allow those parameters to be passed back to the client’s website for appropriate reporting on their backend?

There are many other concerns I have but please clarify what you mean by External Parameters.

On another note, when speaking with your support personnel, they made it sound like it was something they were looking to resolve.

Are you saying that WebTrends will NOT be resolving this issue now?

I look forward to your response to the above.

Also just to clarify what this post is about, it is strictly about the automated integration between Adwords & Google Analytics which is the only way you will get ROAS related metrics attached to Adwords Click Data within Google Analytics. At least that is the only way I know of to get this type of report within Google Analytics.

You are correct that WebTrends Dynamic Search does work with Google analytics but not in this instance of Adwords automated integration.

Appreciate your response!

Hi Les,

The URL portion “product=1234” is an internal URL parameter. We have always allowed client-supplied URL parameters, such as product=12345, or any other parameters which help the client with their internal business intelligence systems. External parameters are ones which are not provided to us by the client.

Regarding automated integration, we are able to append the parameters for the client, allowing them all the reports they would have received with Adwords automated integration. In other words, for the client, the process is the same.

Best,
Marta

Please advise on how do WT.oss and WT.oss=Search phrase work.

Marta, thank you for your explanation about client given parameters. Unfortunately, not the answer I was looking for.

I guess that is the only way WT Dynamic Search works with GA and cannot dynamically capture and re-append the GCLID parameter Google Adwords generates.

It sounds like this is an upgrade that your technicians will need to work to enhance your solution to be able to provide your clients with better Google Adwords integrated reports as mentioned above.

Dipen, sorry for the late response!

It doesn't appear that WT Dynamic Search supports that. At least I haven't gotten confirmation that this issue has been resolved.

Please contact your WT rep to help get this pushed up higher on their development priority list.

Best, Les

Knika, again sorry for the late response. To answer your question (although we are not a WT reseller/installer), the documentation describes this field to be an On-Site Search field. If your website provides visitors the ability to enter a search phrase to find other web pages within your website, you can use this parameter to store the Search Phrase as long as your on-site search system allows you the ability to capture that value.

In addition there is a WT.oss_r=# field which allows you enter the "#" of search results returned by your on-site search system.

I hope this helps!
