So, just how do you mine the Google database? Do you search for a term just like any other? Google recently launched Google Holiday Shopping, an aggregator of top product searches for certain categories. Marketing Vox reported Google “mined millions of recent Google Product Search queries to put together some of the most popular products people are searching for.”

There are many categories from which to choose and the way that the categories are separated makes it easy to find what you want.

For example, there’s an overall product search. This category is labeled as “All Categories.” This category combines all searches.

Among the segregated categories are a video game and toy category, a specialty food category and a cold weather category, to name a few.

What’s Popular?

Overall, the Nintendo Wii was the number one search. If a surfer clicked on it, they would be taken to a site that lists vendors selling the product. This is presented in a comparison shopping site way. The product is listed according to descending price point. On either side of each listing, relevant Google ads appear. Users can finagle results, categorizing them by such variables as price, brand and seller rating. This is the value of online comparison shopping.

Another tab that users will find helpful that is common on comparison shopping sites is the “Take advantage of special offers” tab. One could speculate that the company decided to go this route because a recent survey revealed that sales from comparison shopping sites are turning a hefty profit – even in these harsh economic times.
