Direct Marketers Do Well Online

08/30/2000
The Direct Marketing Association relates some of the successes of its members.

In 1999, 49% of the companies surveyed by the DMA reported online profits. The figure has risen to nearly 70% for 2000. Currently, the report notes, 55% of these companies are emphasizing return-on-investment (ROI) and basing future growth plans on it.

Other points noted by the DMA include:

86% of respondents expect interactive media to increase revenue over the next three years

Median spending levels for site development is $60,000 versus $50,000 for promotion

66% cite search engine positioning and 54% cite e-mail as top online promotion methods -- e-mail was rated "most effective," while search engines, though used more, were rated "somewhat effective"

Not surprisingly, catalogs, a staple of the DMA and its member companies, were cited as the best offline driver of website traffic.
