Online sales of air tickets almost doubled
is is according to online travel research firm PhoCusWright, which predicts that sales this year will reach nearly USD14 billion.
Southwest Airlines was the most successful online air ticket retailer, making 26 percent of its revenue, or USD1.4 billion from online sales. Most of the rest of the major airlines made less than 10 percent of their revenues online.
PhoCusWright warns travel agencies that the increasing move to online sales by airlines could jeopardize their businesses. Commissions from airlines for travel agencies are already much lower than they were a decade ago but the airlines can avoid paying commission entirely by selling directly to consumers.
