high speed Internet access in the US will surpass dial-up in 2005.
The adoption rate of high-speed residential services in the US during 2000 was over 230 percent. Strategis predicts there will be 36 million broadband subscribers in 2005, when those services will overtake dial-up access.
The growth will be driven by increased consumer demand and improvements in technology which make it easier to roll out broadband. Last year, broadband providers in the US overcame a number of hurdles, such as infrastructure upgrades, which will ensure a continued high adoption rate.
Cable and DSL will be the two most popular forms of access, accounting for over 30 million subscribers. Fixed wireless and other forms of access such as two-way satellite will account for the rest.
The growth in broadband will create opportunities for manufacturers of DSL and cable equipment as the current adoption rate is being held back by limits on the supply side.
