Wireless in the US
12/04/2001
There were roughly 118.4 million wireless subscribers in the US as of June 2001, generating roughly $58.7 billion in revenue for their service providers.
CTIA surveys US wireless service providers on a semi-annual basis. The 30 June 2001 installment of the survey determined that roamer revenues dropped by 5% between 2000 and 2001 -- from $3.90 billion to $3.70 billion, respectively.
It is likely that roamer revenues have declined because wireless service providers are increasingly gaining access to more territory and are therefore offering nationwide and international plans.
While CTIA reports that US wireless subscribers totaled 118 million as of June 2001, its website features an up-to-date total, which is currently about 123 million. eMarketer predicts that there will be 125 million mobile phone suscribers in the US by the end of 2001.
