Around the World with Internet Users

01/22/2002
Looks like the US can't claim greatest percentage of net users anymore -- a recent study finds that Western Europe has 29.8% of the world's total users, whereas the US claims 29.2%.

IDC notes that as of 2001, $615.3 billion in revenue has been generated worldwide from e-commerce transactions. Japan claims third place after Western Europe with 15.8% of the total, followed by the Asia-Pacific region with 6.1%.

IDC also reports that there are 497.7 million internet users worldwide (as of 2001). IDC predicts that between 2000 and 2005, the compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of internet users around the world will be 19%. The Asia-Pacific region will experience the greatest CAGR (29%) whereas the CAGR of US internet users will be 11% during the time period.

eMarketer's 2002 eGlobal: Demographics & Usage Report presents worlwide internet user estimates from a number of different firms. Ipsos-Reid believes the total number of global internet users for 2001 is 400 million, but eMarketer believes it is higher at 445.9 million in 2001 -- an estimate that is closer to IDC's.
