Nearly USD40 billion spent on dotcoms in 2001

USD39.7 billion to acquire 1,289 Internet companies

This figure is less than half the amount for 2000, when USD90 billion was spent.

Around USD3.3 billion of the total spending in 2001 involved asset sales of bankrupt or shutdown dotcoms.

According to Webmergers, Internet infrastructure companies and sites together, accounted for more than 80 percent of total spending, or USD25.5 billion.

In all, 575 infrastructure companies were bought in 2001, together with 523 sites.
