Global home Net access population grows
05/10/2002
The number of people who access the Internet from home, grew by 7 percent from the fourth quarter of 2001 to the first quarter of 2002, reports Newsfactor.
This is according to the latest Nielsen-Netratings Global Internet Trends report.
According to the research firm, around 34 percent of global Internet users are based in the US and Canada.
Twenty seven percent of home Internet users come from Europe and the Middle East, while Asia-Pacific and Latin America accounts for 21 percent and 2 percent respectively.
The remaining 16 percent of home Internet users are attributed to ‘the rest of the world’.
Email remains the world’s most popular Internet activity according to the findings. In fact, email usage is as high as 90 percent in a number of countries including the UK, Australia and The Netherlands.
Alternative activities such as instant messaging and chatrooms are used by less than 30 percent of respondents in most countries.
Listening to Internet radio or watching video content was popular with less than 50 percent of Internet users around the world.
However, the data indicates that in regions where broadband is popular, there are higher rates of usage.
Nielsen-Netratings forecasts that more Internet activities will grow in popularity once broadband becomes the norm.
