YouTube to Sell Advertising on Search Result Pages
11/12/2008
YouTube seems to be growing beyond just a social media site. It’s morphing into a major online advertising player, if its recent announcement is anything to go by.
Google recently announced that it would start to sell space on YouTube search-results pages. It recently acquired the video sharing site and is wasting no time in turning it into a revenue producer.
How Ad Selling On YouTube Works
Basically, any one who puts a video on YouTube can promote it on a search-results page. Much like the way AdSense ads work, you can bid on keywords and the promoted videos will show up on the right hand side of the page. A miniature image and some text will be listed.
Advertisers are only charged when a viewer clicks on an ad. To control ad spend, advertisers can set a maximum price per click. Google is in control of deciding which ads will be shown. This is in part based on what advertisers pay and keyword relevance, much like its regular search results pages.
Google Hits Gold Again with YouTube Ads
YouTube had the most number of search queries of any site, behind Yahoo and Google itself, according to comScore, a noted online measurement firm. And, advertisers have been chomping at the bit to promote via the site.
Recent feedback from advertisers include why they’re hailing this new way to connect with customers online – one industry executive has always considered YouTube as a difficult advertising mode until now.
Some YouTube Advertising Bumps in the Road
While most advertising industry execs hail this move by Google, some remain skeptical. Google says it realizes that YouTube still has an image problem in that some still think of it as a medium for youth to trade innocuous, viral videos.
The company is working to change this perception by adding more professional videos to the site.
