SERPs and Your Company Image

11/04/2008
At some time or other, most large companies will be attacked by the press. The problem is, even if the negative press takes quotes out of context, tells flat out lies, or is biased, it can wind up near the top of search engine results, which can cause a company image problems and a headache.
In some cases, a company may hire an Internet marketing firm to create lots of SEO-driven content to drive the negative results down the page – or at least from the top of search engine results. This can be hairy to accomplish if a company has a dearth of links, as search engines use links to judge quality and/or credibility of a given position.

How to Protect Your Company’s Image in Search Engines
If you want to ward off an attack like the one described above, you’ll need to construct alternative media types. For example, you may add a forum to your site, open accounts on social media sites like MySpace and Facebook, post some videos to YouTube, etc. Every domain is scored differently. And, they all have the ability to rank right along with your primary domain.

By creating multiple media outlets for your company, you can push the majority of negative and unwanted coverage down in rankings. However, you’ll need to do more than just create pages. You’ll need relevant and interesting content.

The #1 Rule to Follow When Creating Different Media Outlets for Your Site
No matter what type of content you decide to create for your company – e.g., video, blog, social media account, etc. – make it compelling enough that viewers will want to share it and that it’s easy to share. Ideally, it should “go viral.”
