When Search Engine Optimization Clashes with Other Design Objectives
06/06/2008
There are times when the search engine optimization (SEO) of a web retailer’s site clashes with other design objectives. To overcome this, Internet marketers must do two things. They must grasp what their customers want, and understand how search engines work
The main goal of most Internet retailers is high search engine rankings. One of the most effective ways to do this is via keyword-intensive content with an end goal of conversion. Keeping this end goal in mind, sometimes the creation of new web pages or page edits may conflict with SEO. This can include everything from images to industry-specific keywords that mean nothing to search engines.
When factors like this collide, site owners must walk a tight “cyber rope,” if you will to deliver what customers want. SEO considerations then have to be weighed against other issues.
The balance that must be struck is between making a site easy to navigate and maintaining a relevant, cohesive online presence. One way to do this is to focus on sensibility, as in common-sense linking between pages. This will make a site easy to navigate for users and organized logically for search engine spiders
When Internet marketers and web retailers intrinsically grasp what motivates and inspires their target marketing, they can then create harmony between user wants and search engine needs.
