MSN thriving in search engine ‘war’ [6/1/2001]

MSN has risen through the ranks of the search engines

et.

Almost 13 percent of all search engine referrals around the world are made by MSN, up from 1.1 percent in January 1999.

Yahoo is still the most popular search engine in the world, used by 41.47 percent of users. Google is second with 13.87 percent, followed by MSN with 12.91 percent, and AOL with 5.4 percent.

Yahoo is also number 1 in the US with 38.75 percent of searchers there using it. MSN is next with 15.9 percent, while Google is third with 11.29 percent, and AOL trails with 7.77 percent.

StatMarket believes the battle for search engine supremacy could mirror the browser war of recent years. In a statement quoted by Newsbytes, the StatMarket vice president Geoff Johnson said: "This could be shaping up as another Microsoft market share war."
