The top U.S. search terms for the last week reveal that many Internet users are looking for Halloween, recording artists, games, and sports.
By Robyn Greenspan Both lists saw the debut of "Hurricane Lili" (number 7 on Lycos and 12 on Yahoo!). Yahoo! introduced "Ryder Cup" this week at number 19, but it had already appeared on Lycos last week number 31. Lycos saw the return of "Christina Aguilera" after a 16-month absence, but she had spent the last three weeks on the Yahoo! list, most recently at number 11. "The Simpsons" showed up on the Lycos list for the first time since 2001 at number 38. The beginning of the academic year brought "Periodic Table" to the list at number 49.
The biggest discrepancies between the two lists were:
"Costumes" and "Tattoos" — numbers 4 and 6 respectively on Lycos, did not appear at all among the 20 leaders on Yahoo! "Nelly" — number 3 on Yahoo! compared to 19 on Lycos. "Eminem" — number 4 on Yahoo! compared to 18 on Lycos. "Avril Lavigne" — number 8 on Yahoo! compared to 22 on Lycos. "PlayStation 2" — number 9 on Yahoo! compared to 29 on Lycos.
