07/07/2000
two-thirds of Internet users who shop online more than once a week are women,
Young people, students, minorities and households without children are least likely to be part of this frequent-shopper group.
About 19 percent of Internet users shop online once a week, 22 percent do so once a month and 43 percent are infrequent Internet shopper. Just under 16 percent have never shopped online.
Approximately 5.1 percent of Internet users shop online more than once a week. 63 percent of those are women and 31 percent are aged between 45 and 54. Nearly 32 percent earn over USD75,000 annually. Over half are married and 44 percent have children under 18 living at home.
Over 60 percent of frequent shoppers have been online for more than 5 years but 20 percent have only been using the Web for less than 3 months.
Just over a third those who shop online more than once a week would prefer to get product information by email, while 26.5 percent would like live text chat, 6 percent self-help and 32 percent a toll-free number.
The study finds that income is not an important factor when consumers are deciding whether or not to shop online. Inexperience and a dearth of online customer suppost were the main reasons given by non-shoppers.
About 18 percent of users earning less than USD35,000 do not shop online while the corresponding figure for those earning over USD75,000 is only 2 percentage points lower at 16 percent.
Race is also a factor. 15 percent of white Internet users say they have never shopped on the Internet but the proportion of black Internet users that have not yet shopped online is 24.5 percent.
People Support interviewed 2,198 Internet users with the assistance of the NPD Group, and the survey has a margin of error of 3 percent.
