Video on Demand Spreads Globally [3/5/2008]
A recent Informa TV & PVRs report predicts that by 2012, more than 78 percent of TV households worldwide will have access to video-on-demand (VOD) or near-video-on-demand (NVOD) services. In hard numbers, that’s more than 900 million households worldwide
The report predicts that the bulk of these (83 percent) would be users in Europe and North America.
VOD service operates similar to today’s premium cable channels in the US. Programs are scheduled to be viewed at certain times, often repeating in closely scheduled time slots.
To build brand awareness, many VOD operators have traditionally offered the service for free. Now that users are more familiar and comfortable with the service, operators are moving to paid service offerings.
By 2012, Informa’s report projects revenues in excess of $10 billion worldwide. Great Britain is the leader in Europe, on track to generate some $677 million by 2012. The UK is followed by France and Germany, who take second and third place respectively. For more insight visit Online Video development
