Forecasting and Understanding Current Web 2.0 Technologies
• Blogging - According to Forrester blogging is a Web 2.0 technology that is here to stay, but does not always effectively keep the attention of the business audience. The forecast is that blogging will become very widely used in social networks and that micro blogs can be a very useful tool in the workplace, connecting peers from around the globe.
• Mashups - A tool that has been used by Google Maps that gives users access to other businesses, real-estate information and location. Mashups join information from various sources into one integrative tool allowing users to connect with various, like information that was not the original intent of any involved party or business.
• Podcasting - Forrester predicts that podcasting is on the decline due to the fact that they are not engaging enough. Podcasts may be informative, but do not aid in the collaborative process as they are one-sided in the communication circle.
• RSS - Forrester believes that RSS feeds are the most underappreciated and underused Web 2.0 technology in the global business communities. RSS feeds allow people to retrieve like-content without having to search for it. This is a time-saving tool that can connect hundreds of thousands of people with the same research and business goals.
• Social Networks - Facebook and My Space are the most widely used global, casual form of communication. As a Web 2.0 technology, they are quickly becoming more widely-used as a business connecter and collaboration channel. Forrester predicts that cultural “resistance” will subside and social networks will be the wave of future business communications. Social networks also allow for advertising and informational transference and conveyance of business ideas and agendas.
• Web 2.0 Forums - Forums are one method for many users to connect, but global demands and time-constraints make forums underused, but they may see an upswing as they may be facilitated as “larger community-focused packages.”
• Wikis - Hawaiian for “fast,” wikis are a collaborative effort designed for user contribution and modification. Expert collaborative input is what generates this Web 2.0 technology. Wikis can be used efficiently for intranet collaborations and Knowledge Management systems in the business world. Forrester deems wikis as “one of the most promising Web 2.0 technologies.” Since wikis allow users to amend and control information, this informational tool has become one of the best ways to convey industry knowledge.
The Web 2.0 technology forecast is the latest in Forrester’s TechRadar series. The series is designed to predict the success of the aforementioned Web 2.0 technologies over the next ten years. The key to effectively utilizing any Web 2.0 technology is creating a long-term plan for producing the best client results through accurate informational flow. Additional technologies included in the study are prediction markers, social bookmarks and widgets.
