An increasing number of workers in the US -- 49% in 2000 and 64% in 2001 -- use the internet at work for personal reasons.
Commissioned by Xylo, Wirthlin Worldwide surveyed 1,001 US workers over the age of 18 to find that 79% of women and 61% of men believe that internet usage at work increases their overall productivity. A greater difference is apparant between the percentage of women and men who believe that personal 'net usage at work helps them do a better job -- 38% versus 9%, respectively.

A browse search in eMarketer's eStat Database on the terms "business internet users" yields 114 records. Of course, every research firm has its own interpretation of personal internet usage at work, so the numbers will vary. NFO Interactive finds that in 2000, 37% of workers constantly surfed for personal reasons at work. Angus Reid finds that in 2000, 46% of the online workforce used the internet during work hours for personal reasons. eMarketer reports that in 2000, there were 55.3 million active adult workplace internet users.
